CZ Scorpion Bag PDW Build

CZ Scorpion Bag PDW Build

A handgun should almost always be your first line for self defense. It's easy to carry on your person concealed or open, and it can be accessed quicker than anything else. However, its lack of extra points of contact and magazine capacity leave room for improvement. The PDW bag gun concept fills in these gaps by providing a system that serves as an effective secondary, not replacing your handgun as a first line but giving you a more effective system to transition to if the need arises.

Here we have a CZ Scorpion built out to fit this role. Our team at Defense Distributors is going to talk about it.

The Gun

Base Gun: CZ Scorpion

The CZ Scorpion is a capable and durable 9mm pistol-caliber carbine (PCC) that is incredibly easy to suppress. Much of the gun has been modified, but the internals remain unchanged, and it is effective, making it a great option for you to transition to if you are in a situation where your handgun doesn't cut it.

Muzzle Device: Rugged 3-Lug

Installing a 3-lug muzzle device allows the build to easily be suppressed quickly. It's effective and simple.

Grip: Magpul Aftermarket Scorpion Grip

The stock grip included on the CZ Scorpion is very close to a 45 degree angle, which many shooters find extremely uncomfortable. Magpul's replacement brings the grip closer to the angle of their K2 line, much more upright.

Rail: Midwest Industries MLok Rail

Much more comfortable and usable than the stock Scorpion rail.

Brace: SB Tactical CZ Scorpion Brace.

The SB tactical brace is a telescoping design, fundementally much different from a folding brace. Though this brace has extra material in the rear in its collapsed state due to the design, it isn't enough to inhibit its use in a bag setup, thus why it has not been swapped to a folding option.

Red Dot: Holosun AEMS Max

Iron sights can do the job, but a quality optic is a great upgrade for your firearm. The AEMS Max from Holosun has an extremely large window, which makes it the perfect red dot for applications where additional vantage is needed. This technique is often used on competition pcc builds to make finding the dot and target quicker, which can also be applied to a self defense build like this.

Why I Ran a Pistol Light instead of a Rifle Light

There has always been a lot of debate about running pistol lights on rifles or pdws. Why wouldn't you go with a rifle light? Well, it all comes down to the purpose of your build. This CZ Scorpion was designed for use and response at closer distances and not for a long-range environment. Because of this, it was decided to prioritize identification and situational awareness at closer range rather than further. The streamlight TLR-1 HL fits this role well and is very ergonomic with the design of the Midwest MLok rail.

The Takeaways

This CZ Scorpion build shows the importance of intentionality when chosing parts for a self defense build. From the light to the red dot to the brace, it's important to consider the use case of your setup and design first with that in mind.
