Description

The EOTECH EXPS3 is the optic a lot of serious users consider the top of the EOTECH line, and it's built for one thing above all: performance in low light and under night vision. It's a holographic weapon sight, which works differently from a standard red dot. Instead of reflecting a dot off a coated lens, it projects a laser-driven holographic reticle inside the window. The practical upshot is a large, clear viewing window and a reticle that's fast to pick up with both eyes open, which is exactly what you want when speed matters.

It comes with a quick-detach lever mount on a raised base that gives a lower 1/3 co-witness with AR iron sights, so it throws on a 1" Weaver or MIL-STD-1913 rail in seconds and comes back off holding zero. The brightness controls are side-mounted, not rear-mounted, which is the detail that makes it work cleanly with a magnifier behind it, you can still reach the buttons. It has 20 daylight settings and 10 dedicated night vision settings, and EOTECH's holographic technology paired with the large window is a big part of why these are so well regarded behind a night vision device.

The one honest tradeoff to know going in: holographic sights draw more power than LED red dots. The EXPS3 runs about 1,000 hours on a single CR123, versus the tens of thousands of hours you'd get from a Holosun or Aimpoint. That's the price of the holographic reticle and the night-vision performance, and EOTECH users accept it for what they get in return. Just plan to swap the battery periodically rather than set-and-forget it for years. You can see the matching HWS ARD below and the rest of our red dots and optics.

Reticle Options

The EXPS3 is offered in more than one reticle. The classic EXPS3-0 uses EOTECH's signature 68 MOA ring with a 1 MOA center dot, the ring is fast to catch up close and the dot is precise at distance. The EXPS3-2 uses the same 68 MOA ring with two 1 MOA dots for holdover reference. Make sure you select the reticle you want before ordering, since it's a permanent characteristic of the optic.

Cut the Glare

The EXPS3's large window benefits from an anti-reflection device in bright conditions. The CovertArms EOTECH HWS ARD is a honeycomb killflash cut for the EXPS3/EXPS2 window to reduce glint and add lens protection.

Add a Magnifier

The EXPS3 is designed to pair with a flip-to-side magnifier, and the side-button layout exists specifically so the buttons stay reachable with one mounted. EOTECH's own magnifiers are the natural match: the G33 (3x) is the classic pairing, the G43 (3x) is the updated version, and the G45 (5x) reaches farther.

Other EOTECH Options

If the EXPS3's price or features are more than you need, the XPS2 is a non-night-vision holographic sight in a smaller package, and the 512 is the budget-friendly AA-battery model for daylight use.

FAQ

What's the difference between a holographic sight and a red dot?
A red dot reflects an LED dot off a coated lens. A holographic sight projects a laser-driven holographic reticle inside the window. In practice the EOTECH gives a large, clear window and a reticle that's very fast to acquire, and it performs especially well under night vision. The tradeoff is shorter battery life.

How long does the battery last?
About 1,000 hours on a single CR123 at a medium setting. That's much less than an LED red dot, which is the inherent tradeoff of holographic technology. Plan to change the battery periodically rather than leaving it for years.

Is it night vision compatible?
Yes. It has 10 dedicated night vision brightness settings and works with all generations of night vision devices. EOTECH's holographic optics are among the best-regarded sights for use behind night vision.

Does it come with a mount?
Yes. It has an integrated quick-detach lever mount on a raised base that gives a lower 1/3 co-witness with AR iron sights, fitting 1" Weaver and MIL-STD-1913 rails. No separate mount needed.

Can I run a magnifier with it?
Yes, and it's designed for it. The side-mounted buttons stay accessible with a magnifier behind the optic. EOTECH's G33, G43, and G45 flip-to-side magnifiers are the natural pairings.

Which reticle should I choose?
The EXPS3-0 has the classic 68 MOA ring with a single 1 MOA dot. The EXPS3-2 adds a second dot for holdover. Both share the fast 68 MOA ring. Pick based on whether you want the holdover reference; the reticle can't be changed later.
